How do you fix something that won't stay broken?

We have a 1994 Fleetwood Tioga on a Ford E350 chassis.
I've always been amazed how trouble free and efficient the hot water heater is.
Lately it's been sporadic when lighting.
A couple of weeks ago it gave up the ghost and after checking fuses and connections we stopped at an RV repair shop on our way home.
They started diagnostics but quit when they found a blown 5A fuse in the electrical panel.
The tech said most of the units he's worked on use a 15A so we put one in and the heater fired right up- problem solved.
Not exactly.
I had checked that fuse the night before and you guessed it- it didn't fire up when I got home.
So I took the 2 thermostat switches out and cleaned them and reinstalled- no dice.
The inline fuse is fine as is the spark unit.
Next day it fired right up!
It matters not if I'm on shore or battery power.
We took a trip last week and it worked roughly half the time and mostly, but not always, in the morning.
Anyone know a test for the circuit board.

thanks in advance
  • If it is a Suburban then it is likely one of the 2 solenoid coils going intermittent. They are identical 12 VDC Coils at about 40 ohms each.
