How to adjust oil pressure sender to gauge (potentiometer)?

My oil pressure sending unit went bad and I could not find a direct replacement. I purchased and installed one but the gauge is reading about 30 pounds too high. I thought I could install a potentiometer and adjust the reading. I installed one but when I turn the pot the pressure goes up not down. Any ideas?
