- cpooExplorerI have done 40 in the past on the way to LA but this time we are stopping in Palm Dessert for a few days. Avoiding Flagstaff is a good idea as that has the greatest likelihood of snow. If weather doesn't work for 35 south and Kansas route then I will drop down to 40 at Memphis and go across through Little Rock and Oklahoma City. Will probably be asking about best bypass of Oklahoma City as well. Thanks. This is so much better than AAA. REal routes from the people who drive them.

Thank you everyone. I am heading initially to Palm dessert so perhaps this is the best route no matter the weather. We will be leaving Madison, WI . Our initial trip is to take 151 to 80 to 35 south and cut across from Wichita to Tucamcari and then take 40 until we cut down to 10 at Phoenix. But perhaps it is easier to drop down to 10 on 25 and cut over to Deming as suggested. Probably avoid some mountains and potential December snowstorms.
40 won't take you to 10 at phoenix. 40-west to I-17 south will but that will take you up to 8000' at flagstaff. your initial thought is the way i'd go...I-40 west/I-25 south to hatch to deming/I-10 west. - hersheyExplorerIf weather is good, go the I-40 to Flagstaff and then I-17 towards Phoenix. Flagstaff is the fly in the ointment. Flagstaff is just nasty in the winter time.

Thanks for noting my typo Dennis. All of sudden the thing just got larger by 10 feet. It is a Sightseer 35 G. Noticed it was nearly freezing in Gulf Shores this morning. Bet you are pleased to miss that. - bluwtr49Explorer II

Bill - eheadingExplorerDid I miss something? If you are going west on I-10, getting off I-25 at Hatch is an excellent idea. I wouldn't go that way if I were going east on I-10 though!!

Easy drive.
Around 200 miles or so.
yup. that's how we usually go on our spring drive from Chicago to phoenix. but suggest you don't go all the way to Las Cruces to pick up I-10. get off I-25 at SR26, exit 41 (Hatch, NM) and follow that to Deming, NM. it's a good 2-lane road and you'll save yourself a bunch of miles and time. - wallynmExplorerTurn west at Hatch and pick up I-10 at Deming. 40 miles of two lane road. No problem.

If weather dictates I 'm thinking about dropping down I-25 to I-10 from Albuquerque. How far is it and what type of driving. 46 foot gas 2015 Winnebago towing Smart Car?
