- tyoungsExplorerDecided to split the trip, went part way on Saturday and finished up on Sunday. Left Leesburg at 11 on Sat AM, got to Dalton Ga by 6-6:30 Sat night. Stayed at a nice pet-friendly La Quinta. Good roads all day and missed the bad stuff just north of Dalton in Chatanooga and Knoxville. Left Sunday morning about 7:30 and except for a little fog in the mountains, had an uneventful ride on Sunday. Worked well to split it up. Thanks for all the recommendations prior to the trip!
- ronfishermanModeratorChecked the temperature at my place a few miles from yours this morning. -27° Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
I have a iPhone APP called Trip Weather. Shows weather throughout a trip. Shows good roads until you get into mid Kentucky. Then possibility of snow rest of the trip threw OH into MI.
Drive safe. - tyoungsExplorerOP here, looks like we are going to wait till Sunday to leave. Thanks for all the feedback
- 2BargosExplorerTyoung hope you see this before you leave, found out earlier the weather service is predicting an Ice storm here tomorrow night and early Saturday with as much as 3-4 inches of ice possible Friday night/Saturday morning and heavy rainfall for Sunday.
- bsinmichExplorerSchools are closed tomorrow for many schools in Oakland/Macomb counties for freezing temps. Any ice on roads won't be affected by salt because it doesn't work under 17F. I wish you good luck and a safe drive.
- rgatijnet1Explorer IIIWe travel a lot in the Winter up North and out West. The interstates are usually cleared soon after a storm and are passable. The large fueling stations are usually also cleared and finding fuel at one of them is not too bad.
The problem is finding a place to stop, unless you plan to boonedock all of the way back home. We carry tire chains and I have had to use them the most to get in to and out of RV parks where the roads are not cleared.
Unless you plan to stay at truck stops and rest areas the whole way back home, I would either buy tire chains or wait until the weather clears enough so that you are assured that you will have a place to stop that has hook-ups. - wa8yxmExplorer IIII would keep a CB on Channel 19, there are a few truck stops along I-75 that will invite you to park if the roads are too bad.
I Michigan you can go to www.michigan.gov/mdot click on the roads and traffic link (top left) and then choose Detroit area Traffic cams.. All the way from Metro Airport to Pontiac you can actually LOOK at I-75 from anywhere internetted.
NOTE: some cameras are off-line if the Police Dispatchers are using them for close up work but you will see the backup from what they are looking at one camera up or down the road.
Yes.. I used to operate those cameras. - Ranger_SmithExplorerI have to do the same trip up to Mason to pick up our new RV. I am going to wait till the weekend of the 1st
- tyoungsExplorerThanks 96 bounder, just what I was looking for! We are in our car and not our rig. Still working so I don't have the option of staying too much longer. Really would like to travel on Saturday but don't want to be imprudent.
- 2BargosExplorerI live 17 miles south of exit 29 on Interstate 75 In Southeastern Ky.
Earlier this week we had a major snow fall (for this area) and The interstate while not closed looked like a Ice rink.
By today everything is back up running normal with no more snowfall predicted in the next few days so you should be safe traveling this way
This Link I 75 Cameras will give you a real time view of the road and traffic conditions.
No snow is being given for my area the next few days but record breaking cold is being given.
