- Executive45Explorer IIIYou haven't said yet whether you're in a hurry. Weather tends to make us slow down a bit. I'd take the southern route, I-10 and enjoy the trip. I-40 may be shorter but is it worth it to worry constantly for the next two or three days? Not for me....Whichever you choose, be safe....Dennis
- firedogExplorerWe have been to the Big Texan three times and haven't seen anyone finish the meal yet. :) That meal is for the young guns!! We have thought about dropping down to 10, not sure at this point. Thank you for the advise.
Ann - My sister and her husband left northern Indiana the day after Christmas heading to a daughter's house in Las Vegas. They were trying to make Amarillo last night. So far the roads have been clear, except around Indianapolis, which they said was terrible.

Amarillo is the home of the Big Texan where a 72 oz steak is free if you can eat it all in one hour. We didn't try but others have and succeeded. Don't remember what it cost if you couldn't finish.
So not a bad place to get stuck.
It costs $72.00 paid in advance. You receive a refund if you complete the challenge. However, why on God's Green Earth would anyone do this and why has this ordinary steak house become famous for it? There's nothing like gimmick marketing. The food is nothing special and certainly not worth a detour. - AlaskaShooterExplorerI almost got stuck in Flagstaff one winter when I overnighted there after traveling west out of TX. Problem was I had TX diesel in my rig (non winterized) and it was WINTER in Flagstaff. Got up, broke camp and the diesel engine cranked and cranked after pre heat and finally started. Ran very rough as it starved and tried to run on freezing diesel. I limped down to the nearest gas station and filled my tanks with winterized fuel. No further issues after that as I headed North to Washington.

Took that challenge in 1988 and succeeded. Took 2 days to "process" that much protein. Does not do much for comfort while traveling if you need to move on the next day. You have to finish the sides as well, not just the steak. If you want to try, order it extremely rare and drink grapefruit juice. Back in '88 it was somewhere around $45 if you did not finish it. Have absolutely no desire to try to repeat. Once was enough.

Have a fiend that spent a couple of days in a rest area on I-10 in NM some years ago. Or, do not know your status but if you have time you can drop down to I-10 and take the southern route. It’s About 500 Miles farther, but I guarantee it’ll be warmer. Grew up in Illinois and if time was not an issue I would take longer and stay warmer.

Wouldn't we run into more bad weather going the more northern route?
Thanks
It all depends. Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Storms can go either south or north. That is why I suggested you check the weather and road conditions.
