Installing surround sound

IHAVE A 1999 Overland motorhome. It had a anolog tv, I up graded to a flat screen tv.The surround sound was hooked to the back of the old tv with a single rc cable. How do I hook up my speakers to the new tv:)
  • When I changed out my analog tv I fed the surround sound from the headphone jack. It;s not true surround sound but it sounds a lot better than the tv speakers.
  • If you are over 35 like me, stereo "surround sound" sounds really really good. :)
  • True 5.1 surround sound requires a rca coax digital, optical, or hdmi hookup from the intput source to the audio playback unit (amplifier)

All modern adio units have at least 2 of the 3.
Same is true of modern TV's.
  • My small amount of surround sound knowledge is that you need to feed the TV into a receiver first. The output jacks from the receiver creates including a sub woofer.

Yup. Well, at least not modern digital surround.

What brand and model is the new TV?
  • After finding no outputs on my TV for any external speakers I went back and read the complete manual. Found nothing. Then I looked at the schematic. So small I had to use a magnifying glass. Ureka! The ear phone output is stereo and 8 ohms. I can drive a 40 watt Pyle amplifier. I have never seen 8 ohm outputs for earphone jacks before.
  • It sounds like your surround sound used an old style single coax digital connection.

If your new TV does not have a digital audio out coax connection, you'll have to check your surround sound system for alternative inputs...

"optical" connections were used from the beginning, your surround sound probably has an optical input and your new TV may. The fiber optic audio cables can still be bought.
