Hello Everyone,I have a question I was hoping someone may have some input on with their own experience. I actually hope no one has had this happen to them but I feel our insurance company my be abandoning us. The incident is as follows...Our RV had been sitting for 2 years on our property and was not insured. It was not being driven but I would start it monthly.We had a fire originating from our RV due to a back fire while I was doing my monthly startup. The fire spread to our house and totaled it and the neighbor’s house had some fire damage as well. Insurance was providing attorney representation for a year but has informed us they will only pay one more month as the RV did not have coverage. Neighbor’s insurance is trying to seek coverage but fire was ruled an accident and no negligence found. But that is not stopping neighbors insurance and they may want to take us to court and our insurance has informed us we are on our own after October.We were under the impression that the RV insurance was needed for coverage for when we took it out on the road for liability as our insurance mentions exclusions if it is off insured property. We have homeowners insurance on the RV was on our property and thought home owners would cover in the event of something happening. The insurance was representing us but is saying they will no longer do so.We are lost and need to know if anyone has gone thru this and can offer some advice.Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Homeowner is at fault for causing the fire albeit accidentally and thus liable for the neighbors damage. The neighbor and their insurance company is right to seek damages from the homeowner. Whether or not op has liability coverage to pay for the neighbors loss is between him and his insurance company.

Very simple explanation.1. Motorized vehicles and Boats are NOT covered thru your Homeowners policy. The Home Policy specifically EXCLUDES such vehicles.2. You MUST have Insurance on each Vehicle/Boat for any coverage to included for you.3. I KNOW this because my Classic Corvette, was in my garage and I was going to lapse the coverage for a year while I did extensive repairs to it. I called my Insurance agent to make sure it was covered while I did this(worried about fire or Tornado destroying the garage and car). The tree falling was an act of nature and thus no one at fault. Your insurance covers damage. If the tree was dead, then tree owner at fault for not taking it down but his homeowners would cover it. If tree owner felled the tree and accidentally hit your property still at fault. A titled motorized vehicle catching fire and a falling tree are oranges and apples. Different laws apply. Accidental or not, you are liable for any damage caused by that vehicle other than a so-called act of god (tornado came along, picked up RV, and threw it into neighbors house). You should have had some type of insurance on that RV.

Good comments, but if I were you I'd have , if you don't already, a quality attorney $$ retained at this point. Armchair opinions are interesting but your possible entire net worth is at stake here. Don't second guess or waste more time with opinions! You need real pro advice and quick.

Maybe since you have one more month of an attorney, see if they can contact the neighbors insurance and work something out. You may have to pay something out of pocket to settle the claim, but it may be better than them winning a large judgment against you. As a former insurance adjuster I can tell you this is a very unique situation. I've never heard anything like it. I would have probably never worried about not having liability coverage on a vehicle that I did not intend to leave my property. What could possible go wrong? But you gave an example of what could go wrong.
