internet on the go

OK, you rver's that have been at it for awhile. I need some good advice. What's the best way to get internet on the go that is secure? I do banking, etc. online and want to start traveling more. Not sure I want to trust public WiFi, but I don't want to really spend a lot for private internet either. What has been your experience with the best way to get on the go internet? Thanks.

  • We also use our smartphone BUT during the month in Florida in January, using it everyday, we use up our `minutes' so we end up paying a penalty.
  • As with many full-timers, we also use a Verizon JetPack and and 18 - 20 GB data plan (depending on how willing my wife is to limit streaming of facebook videos of the grandkids...). There are good tech forums on RV-Dreams.com and the Escapees web site (both geared toward full-timing). There is a also a couple who do a lot of writing on mobile technology - search for "Technomadia" and you should find them. They offer a mobile internet handbook that's a go-to source of information for a lot of folks.

  • We use Verizon wifi as well. But be aware that spending extended time in the 4 Corners region (New Mexico, Utah, Arizona and S Colorado), there is very little cell service. We went a couple months without a signal - had to drive somewhere specifically to do banking. It wasn't a big deal because we tow a trailer, but still something to be aware of.
  • We use a Verizon Jetpack 4G/LTE hotspot with a 20GB/month plan at $100/mo. I've just added an older model Verizon Jetpack that's been limited to the slower 3G speeds by an eBay vendor, and only costs $5/mo for unlimited data. We'll use that one when the faster speeds aren't needed, to keep down our overages on the high priced plan. The slower 3G speeds should be adequate for banking, general surfing, email, etc.
  • Whenever we are away from home we use our phones as hotspots.
Works great as long as you have a good cell service.
We have AT&T and like we said so far so good.
  • We use a Samsung Smart Phone with a Verizon data plan as a Wi-Fi hot spot. Used to have a separate mifi but as smart phone hot spots got better, didn't see the need to keep the mifi. It is more complicated than at home on demand unlimited internet. You have to monitor your usage to ensure you don't exceed your data plan.
