Is 153,000 Miles A Lot For a 1997 Class C ?

My girlfriend is going to look at a 1997 Class C Ford with E350 chassis and V10 engine with 153,000 miles. Is this a lot for an RV? Averages out to about 8500 miles a year. It was a rental until around 2000 and is on it's second owner since then. Maintenance has been well kept. Thanks for any future input.

  • See my post under the Onan generator oil analysis thread.

The V10 is good for 300k easy, 500k with reasonable maintenance. Everything else will wear out before the V-10. At 127k mine had ZERO measurable wear on a teardown for a spit plug.

It is 17+ years old right? If they drove 15K a year it would be like 255K so at 153K it is not over used.... with that said. I would take it to a RV mechanic before I would ever buy it. And I would not pay over $3000 even if everything works.

Kinda agree here with the mileage thing. First most, it's a van. Is 153,000 miles a lot for a van that is 17 or 18 years old? And for whoever said it's "wore" (think you meant worn) out, I would say not necessarily. A lot of the stuff could of been replaced. I would definitely have a mechanic look at it. Personally, we don't buy used vehicles. And the unknowns and/or what if's keep us from them.
  • Thanks for everyone's comments. We decided not to pursue this.

  • A friend once said he would never buy a used rental vehicle because he knows how he mis-treats rentals. With numerous drivers with various driving styles it's like playing the lotto...sometimes you win but most times you lose.

Most RVs begin to really show age issues after year 15. Leaks, appliance failures plus drive-train issues on a Class C with that many miles.

I would look for something with less mileage and closer to 10 years old for similar dollars.
  • ANYTHING with that amount of miles is wore out. the bushings in the steering the seal,s etc , they arn,t ment to run forever.
  • It may be prudent to foster a discussion regarding price!
  • An RV with that many miles is unusual, but if everything is in good shape and has been well maintained I wouldn't be too concerned about mileage specifically. RV chassis have a pretty easy life - mostly highway miles, good roads, and well maintained by people who don't want to get stranded on vacation. Compare this to all the E350 based commercial trucks out there with far more abuse and far higher miles that seem reliable enough.

Obviously it has been used a lot. Things do wear out. Plan/budget accordingly.
