Is 330 HP enough for a 37-40' DP

If regulations for emissions increase to include 'off-road' equipment, CAT is will up a creek without a paddle. Looks like Cummins, Volvo and others, will be the preferred 'off-road' engine as they mastered the clean air restrictions.

I just don't understand why the engineers at CAT could not jump that hurdle.

True, but every heavy equipment operator has a fleet of repair trucks and they work on the fleet every night!

To me that means finding the right rpm and gear combination which will avoid the engine overheating, and then accepting whatever speed the rig gives me.

On Cabbage Hill on I-84 for instance, that usually worked out to 45mph on the climb in 4th gear.

On Powder River on US 16 I had more trouble, was down at 20 mph and still had to stop and cool her down a bit. Can't win them all.

But,was the CAC cleaned? The front of the CAC is where the vast majority of the dirt will be deposited. Not possible to clean it from the back!

We are looking at going out west when we retire but I can't even get up I26 in South Carolina without running hot? The motor only has about 10K on it and the radiator was cleaned when the new motor was put in. Any help for a DP newbie

Well if the cooling system is up to speck, how are you driving in the hills? Tell me your procedure for claiming hills. What experience do you have driving a big heavy diesel?

I have a 39 ft coach that weighs in at 28,000 fully loaded and pull a 20 ft car trailer that grosses about 7000 lbs. Have a 330 Cat with 860 lbs of torque and it seems to get the job done. There are coaches with more power but we all get where we want to go. I usually set the cruise at 65 and seems to do fine.

Based upon these replies, I'm leaning towards the Cummins ISC. I like the idea that they are 'kit' friendly...not so much that I'd add one, but that they are not maxed out hp/ torque wise.

We have a 2004 Diplomat with the Cummins 330 hp engine and pull a 2012 Equinox. I don't go 65 mph going up the grapevine in CA or some of the other Western states. I also don't drive 70 mph. Works fine for us.
