I had these same concerns when I went to Alaska so I carry a 1/2 breaker bar and sockets and a pipe that slides over the bar. I have removed the tires many times in my driveway to tighten wheel bearings and clean the caliper slides on the brakes. In ten years and over 80,000 miles I have never had to change tires on the road. Not mentioned in this thread so far is use 6 point sockets rather than 12 points. Also if you use a short extension make sure it is not from HF or another Chinese made product I have had these twist. I also carry a plug repair kit and a compressor. I had to use that once on my return trip from Alaska just as I crossed the border from Canada. I did not have to remove the tire.
