Just an observation....

My local RV dealer wants $120.00 for a oil / filter change on my 2006 for E450. The local Ford dealer has a truck service center, and charges $45.00 for the same service (using Ford Motorcraft semi synthetic oil, and motorcraft oil filter. Guess where I get the oil changed...
  • I get that done much cheaper by doing it myself. And I know it's done correctly. And everything I do myself on the RV makes the whole ownership experience far more sustainable. Too bad more of us don't try this approach...

Yea, my local dealership is pretty low on their oil change price, but they hound you to do other service. That low oil change price is just to get you in the door. If you can resist the sales pitch for other services, it is a perfectly good oil change.

They do the same thing with tires - the dealership's prices for tires are remarkably competitive, but it turns out it doesn't include the fees for balancing or mounting, and they always insist a wheel alignment is needed. I have bought tires from them, and almost laugh at the expression of the service writer when I decline, sometimes I have to repeat myself, the wheel alignment.

The service departments at dealerships make their money on "add-ons". Just be aware of what you are having done, what it costs, and things you DON'T "have" to do.
  • Who is more likely to leave the plug loose or to double gasket it or not tighten the filter?

Actually I use Scott tissue for RV's
  • I lay cardboard on the ground underneath and change our RV's E450 V10 oil and filter. I found out that's the best way to make sure the Extended Performance version of Mobile 1 5W-20W and a K&N filter get put in. Pretty cheap way to do it, too.
  • Local Dodge dealer does oil/filter change on my 5.9L CTD (12 gts Rotella/fleetgard) for $50

    Stopped even looking elsewhere
