Keeping residential frig closed on the road

Looking to purchase a new MH with a residential frig. Heading to the show in Pomona this week just to look. I watched a video about a Thor model, where the residential frig is kept closed with a screw and knob combination between the two doors. It looked like a fine threaded screw, and the operation seemed cumbersome. Is the locking devise needed? Have any of you made your own devise? Do other brands use different locks?
Just asking so I will be well informed before I meet the totally uninformed salesperson.
Thanks, Gary

  • Boy,
I wish I could say what Dance chick said.....
When we changed ours out, I ordered an extra set of hinge plates. As it was reversible door (most are) all I had to do was A: Make pins to fit - No big deal and B: make a block that pins store in when we are parked.

This is easy and inexpensive and during the check for getting underway we just check that the pins aren't in the block.

  • We've never added anything extra to ours and never had a problem....has always stayed closed.
  • We use a 16 inch piece of black velcro and wrap it around the handles. Two years of full timing and LOTS of miles with no problems.

    Good luck at the show.
  • Thanks guys: although not aesthetically as pleasing as the almost invisible knob your ideas make much more sense.
We are off to Pomona Tuesday to see if some of the MHs we have viewed on line tickle our fancy.
  • I put a piece of velcro on each side of the top of the refrigerator doors. I used the kind that has velcro on side and sticky tape on the other. Then when we travel, O put a thrid piece of velcro across the top of both doors. Never had the frig. open while traveling and the solution is out of sight on the top of the frig.

  • self stick safety latch

we use a 'child safety' plastic "snap buckle" ?
one piece has a flexible strip and has the male end of the buckle
the other piece is just the receiver end

the flex strip is fasten to the side of the fridge
the receiver is on the door

    mounts with 3M adhesive strip

3 yrs and no sign of wear

    quick and easy to use
    i bought them at OSH

they look the one in this link, but i mounted them opposite of the picture
picture has strip on door, latch on side
i put strip on side latch on front
because fridge is in cabinet and its easier to release 'buckle' with it on front of door
  • I think this is what Tiffin is using on their residential fridges....from Southco LINK

Might even be able to order directly from Tiffin

  • I use a strip of double sided velcro, what I mean by double sided is it has the hook on one side and pile on the other, wrap this around the handles and it has worked fine for 2 years. Just have to remember to put it on. After one mistake we now have it on our preflight check list.

  • On trip one our Maytag broke the latch and we had a gallon of milk to clean up.

Ever since we have use a bungy cord and in 16,000 miles no problem
  • Oops - comment was erased as it applied to std rv fridge not residential.
