Key West

A few of us are heading to Key West in July. any suggestions on campgrounds. Have been told by a few friends to maybe stay in Marathon and not take the rigs all the way down to Key West and just use a car from Marathon. Any ideas?
  • Many, including myself, have pulled and driven big rigs right to the outskirts of Key West. I would't go into town though.

The Navy campground is at about Mile Marker 2. That is 2 miles from the end of the Overseas Highway, US 1. We have pulled our TT and driven our Class A pulling a Toad to that campground with no problems.

Prepare your route carefully. Real Estate is VALUABLE, so turn around spots are few. Likewise, gas stations are tight, so gas up on the mainland. Gas, as everything else is more expensive in the Keys.

Bad idea its 55 miles one way, what was the person thinking that told you that. Lots of things to do in Key West - I guess it would work if you only wanted to go down once.

I would look at Bluewater Key, its 14 miles from Key West - expensive but the best campground out of the 200 I have stayed at in the last 5 years

X2-it will be off season, not cheap but very nice!

You can take the bus to Key West as there is a stop right across the road from Blue Water.
  • we stayed at point of view campground in key largo. it was a two hour trip to key west got there at 11am . parked mh at fort zachary $7 for the day. took taxi to duval st then walked around. if you take the key west trolley you can get on and off near all attractions. it was nice to have the mh with us. also much to do in other keys like theater of the sea in islamorada.
  • While you wouldn't want to drive down Duval Street in the city of KW with a trailer or Class A, getting to Boyds or Bluewater Key is not an issue. You might even be able to get into one of the state parks at that time of year (Bahia Honda, Long Key, John Pennekamp).
