Kwikee Steps won't work

Went out to our motorhome tonight to look at something. The Kwikee steps came out fine, when I shut the door they went up about 3/4 of the way or so and stopped. They won't go up or down. I took the motor off hooked it up to a car battery and it works fine. So I put the motor back on, the steps went out then when I shut the door they went in 3/4 of the way or so and stopped again. They won't go out or in. It got dark on me so I will have to look at it again tomorrow but I thought maybe someone might have a better idea of what the issue is.. Thanks

Had that problem myself. Steps were bent (multiple times in fact) ended up replacing the Steps.. Got new ones (Well used) from Vizone RV (I think tha'ts the name) Just off I-75 north of London, KY.

Between happening and replacement (Which was done by myself and my good friend Jack.. (that's 12 tone air/hydraulic bottle jack from harbor freight.. did not use air, just pump handle) the job was fairly easy.

Betwen the first time it happened and replacement I just "Assisted" the motor a bit with my toe..

Kwikee controllers do not use LIMIT switches, instead they sense motor current, when it climbs above a Threshold (preset at factgory) it assumes the steps have either reached the limit of travel or encountered an obstruction. Basically a good system but if there is any binding it shuts off early.

+1, every three months on every pivot point!

  • I had this issue and decided to just buy one on Amazon that looked the same. After changing it out I took the old one apart and the hard plastic bushings around the gear were chewed up bad to the point one was just powder. Been fine ever since. I think I paid $45.
  • Lube all pivot points on the steps good.
If motor puts them out OK, then motor is probably good.
They are getting to much binding going in.
  • One thing I did when mine did not seem to work was loosen the frame holding bolts from underneath, then try it again. Takes a ratchet and a socket set. A couple of turns on each bolt so the steps felt loose. If the steps work then, you have released the tension a bit and the steps are no longer tripping out on overload conditions. Why you have an overload becomes the issue. I ended up putting some shims under the bolts, then tightening it all up tight again and it kept on working. Low battery causes higher amps. Wear and tear causes round holes to become oblong. Use your jumpers to connect to a good battery and see if that helps.

The motorhome is plugged into shore power so I'm pretty sure it's not the battery. Plus I started the motorhome and it still won't work. Yes I cleaned it while I had it off. I think I read on here one time that you can use an electric window motor they are the same thing and cheaper to buy. Is this correct? They look the same.
