I have ben using this dry film lube.

motorcycle chain wax for me it does not attract dirt or dust
sprays on just like motorcycle chain lube. also use it on my cycle chains

I use what ever I have at hand. A couple of times when out in the boonies I used engine oil to get rid of that pesky squeeeeeek.... been doing this for 36 years...Never replaced a step.

I use PB Blaster to clean the pivot points, and then a motorcycle chain lube.

Yes, clean the joints. I also use compressed air. Don't worry about a little dirt buildup. Just clean it before you lube. I clean/lube the joints one or two times a year.
The steps on our 96 Southwind are working properly and give me no problems.

Bicycle chain lube from Walmart is about the cheapest lube you can find... I paid about $5 for a can that will last me probably 10 years or more....

I've used a dozen different greases, oils, sprays, WD-40, Spray white Grease and, even regular old 30W engine oil. It all works. Of course it's going to attract grime/dirt/dust and more. They're riding about 8" off the road, you can expect them to get GRIMY. No biggie. Every once in a while, you spray all the pivot points with some $2.00 carb cleaner spray and, all the "grime" washes out and, you're ready for more of whatever you choose.

It seems people get worried about what to use on simple step pivots. We're not talking Space Shuttle here, just some step pivots. Pivots that, no matter what you use on them, will STILL GET DIRTY AND GRIMY!

So, use what you choose, and just don't go too far in between lubes. And they'll be just fine.
