Leak has been found, how to dry

Ice maker line has been dripping for a month, under frig, the edges of carpet wet, wood is soaked, help please. Should I open the long door under frig and point a space heater into the opening, forget it and let it dry out over time. I am worried about mold, etc. daytime temps are 78 F. Thanks

Jim

  • Go to a janitorial supply and purchase a gallon of Mil-go and saturate the affected wood and carpet then. Wet vac much as you can then blow a fan or two to dry. The Mil-go will assist in killing and preventing mold growth.
  • I would run both ac units which will dry out the air. As that is what a dehumidifier is.. an airconditioner that is in a continuous loop. I would take a wet pick up and I would vacuum all that water up and pull up the carpet where the wetness is . then after that blow air on the wet area also I would get furniture oil so it will displace the water so the plywood won't delaminate although I am sure that HR used marine plywood. in my buses they used marine plywood and there was a leak in the rear where the rubber was pealed, it even rotted in a little spot. I would not delay on this. you should also get a little can of Kilz to prevent mildew smells entering the coach (like me) there was an old leak in my HR and it was from a water line with a hole in it. It was fixed but that smell,, you know what I mean. but you got to pull up the carpet. I used to clean carpets for a living.
  • Unless you run the dehumidifier, a heater might not work too well, as you'll be creating humidity. I would just run a regular fan or two, pointed directly at the wet area as much as possible. Keep your windows open too.

Get a heater and dehumidifyer in there asap.
X-2, and do it right by lifting up the carpet and drying underneath it!

You can speed up that process by vacuuming up as much water as possible.
