leak in the slide out.

I have an '07 Itasca Suncruiser 38T. It has developed a leak in the bedroom slide. The water is coming in were the motor is attached to the roof of the slide. The only way to access the leak, on the slide roof, is to remove the topper. I have been told not to attempt this by myself. The topper is spring loaded, and requires 3-4 people to safely remove it. I would be better off to have the dealer do it.

My question is has anyone ever removed a topper and do I need 3-4 people to safely remove it?

Thank you Bill

  • Yes, those drain holes need to be cleaned periodically. I use a tooth pick and then a pipe cleaner. Not the greatest system for locking a slide, but if you maintain the drain, you won't have any problems.

    Best Regards!
  • A little update.
I called Winnebago, when all else fails, read the manual. They told me that the motor I was seeing was for the slide out locking not the slide itself. Where the motor shows, on the roof of the slide out, is a rubber boot. It gathers the water that gets on the roof of the slide out under the topper. This boot has a drain that comes out the side of the slide near its roof. That drain often gets plugged, and the water will then come in the coach by the motor. I checked the drain and found it filled with wax from earlier this year. The wax hardened and was preventing the water from draining and backing up. At least, this is my hope. We have not had any rain and we are on the road, so I'll wait until I get home to put it to the hose test.
    thanks to all

  • Are you sure the motor is attached to the roof of the slide? All that I have seen are under the bed, accessible through an access panel in the floor of the bed.
There is a bulb seal on the inside and outside. One seals when the slide is extended and the other when the slide is retracted.
The wiper really isn't a seal but is intended to clean the slide top and sides as it retracts.
Could the slide not be contacting the bulb seal and compressing (displacing) it?
  • Thank you all!!
    As always GREAT suggestions.
I went on the internet and found Youtube information. My slide out is 17.5 feet long so I will have to have someone help.
    Thanks

  • It CAN be done by yourself, but I RECOMMEND at least two people. There are directions on the internet. Familiarize yourself with your system before you start and know your limitations.....finally, get a mobile tech instead of a dealer should you decide it's over your head.....Dennis
  • I took my six foot dinette topper completely off and then replaced it by myself. The trick is to have the right size cotter pins or nails to hold the spring from retracting.

when you go up to check it out, you should be able to hand roll the spring wrapped topper so that it is just a bit loose, then roll it out just a bit until you can get the cotter pin or nail right through the end in the hole. Take a picture of what it looks like when you get this part figured out, so you know what it should look like when you replace it back onto the wall.
  • I helps to have someone help when you remove a slide topper but 4 peoplr is a bit excessive. Have you looked on Utube for a video? Iusally check there before I tackle a job for the first time.
