Leather or Vinyl for Captains Chairs

If the chairs are not broken, consider having them recovered at a local upholstery shop. You could save some money and fitment headaches.

Get quality coverings no matter which you choose. Cheap on any of it and it will wear out in a few years.

As an aside, I did some research on body stress from a seated position. Back, neck, arms, legs feet, etc. Come to find what feels comfortable to us often leads to stress over long periods.

The Japanese came up with a desk chair the moved slowly, almost imperceptibly. Up & down, side to side, tilt, a full range of motion. We can emulate this with an adjustable seat to a good degree, but few do. Ever 10 minutes or so, we should make a couple of adjustments, often dilbertly making it uncomfortable.

Oh, the desk chairs started at $3,000, we did not buy any.

Cloth! Vinyl is too hot and sticky and leather seems to need either a lot of maintenance or breaks up in a fairly short time.

We hate the seats in our rig (Flexsteel) with what I think is ultra-leather. It's not just the fabric that we hate. They're too big (particularly the fore/aft length of the cushion), there's no height adjustment (DW's feet don't reach the floor), no cushion-tilt adjustment and there's no vertical shock absorber.

I drove transit for three years after my first retirement. The coaches had a Recaro driver's seat with cloth upholstery. It had all the above adjustments and an air suspension/shock absorber. Throw in a steering column with two universal joints, a telescopic section and a wide-range tilt steering wheel, anyone between 4'6" and 6'10" could get a driving position that was comfortable for an 8-hour shift. I rarely get more than 90 minutes in the RV without a break for relief of hamstring cramps and DW can't drive the beast at all.

Cloth.

Except for the driver's seat, which is cut to fit sheepskin.

I would take leather over cloth any day. Our house has leather, our truck has leather, our car has leather, our RV has cloth. I hate that and am re-upolstering the dinette cushions with leather and covering the couch with leather. Leather seems to wears much better than cloth and it is much much easier to clean, especially dog hair and crumbs.

For RV or auto trips longer than a few min anything except vinyl and Ultraleather is NOT Vinyl.

We have two old cars with vinyl and Vinyl just does not breath. Our MH has Ultraleather and I would order again. Easy to keep clean and is very comfortable on my posterior.

I've had both cloth and leather. I would go with cloth if I had a choice.

You're definitely not the only ones. We prefer cloth in all seating, especially the couch, but unfortunately most manufacturer's seem to be leather/ultraleather driven.
