Leather or Vinyl for Captains Chairs

We are updating our 9 year old unit. Have looked at and sat in dozens of seats. The ones we found and like the best are vinyl. Is there a huge difference in feel over time? These are amish made from a very reputable company. What are the pro's and con's of vinyl verses leather?
Thanks!

  • People are going to hate this but vinyl will out last leather 10 to 1.
Check out any old cars from the 60's or 70's. The leather ones are shot where the vinyl often still looks new.
Anything will outlast leather and stay looking good longer without splits or cracking.
A final note, only the wear surface is generally real leather anyway (the part that cracks first) the rest is vinyl.

  • Leather or ventilated leather(holes) with a small fan under the seat. There's wiring and plenty of room.
Fabric seating is the most comfortable as it breathes a lot. Not sure what fabrics are available but the seas in our 9 year old F150 are good as new and we don't sweat in them.
  • Before you purchase, verify if they will have the integral seat / shoulder harness. Not all seats come with even the seat belt. Might I suggest you check here

Before you can get DOT approved seats, VIN number, photos and some other info will be required by Ivan.
  • We prefer our Ultra Leather in the coach vs the "leather" in the jeeps. Not hot, does not crack, not cold. It is 18 years old and wearing better than my 13 year old JGC leather.

Just be sure to get the real Ultra Leather, not a knock off.
  • I have had cloth, leather, and ultra leather, my choice for comfort and wear is a quality cloth covering. Not hot, not cold, does not crack. I got it on my 2011 Winnebago and on my 1995 pleasure-way, that one is almost 19 years old with over 100,000 miles and it still looks and feels new.

  • I have had leather in cars for many years and frankly I might choose cloth next time. Leather is just as hot/cold as vinyl is in summer/winter. My Bounder had cloth captain chairs and they were more comfortable on a long drive day than my "ultra leather" is in the Safari.
  • I'll add leather. Leather isn't as hot as vinyl and doesn't crack like vinyl can/does if you use leather cleaner/conditioner and never any other chemical cleaners on it. Some of the other things will cause leather to split/crack also.
  • If you plan to keep the coach another 9 years, I would go with REAL leather and not the Ultra Leather, which is a vinyl. REAL leather tends to get softer with use, if it is maintained properly, and should last for the remaining life of your coach. If you current seats are serviceable, any auto upholstery shop should be able to update your existing coach chairs with new foam and covers.
