LEDs lights attached connected to awning power

I want to install led lights on my awning, but don't want to have wires hanging down.

Has anyone attached them to the 12v at the awning motor ?

If yes let me know how you did this.

Thanks
  • generally the awning motor is only powered when extending or retracting (at least it was on mine).
I mounted the LED strip (16.5 feet) on the coach wall under the awning & ran the wiring down the arm.

I used the same hole that the factory used to run the power the wall to the awning.

Once inside the coach i was able to use 12vdc or 120vac power.

I posted some pics and details in this thread - http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/27932888/srt/pa/pging/1/page/3.cfm

here's a couple pictures from a recent camping trip (no flash) - i have a separate small set of (red) led's under the coach to illuminate or back light the steps. the step lights are not multi color & are on a separate switch.

Good feedback. One problem with mounting them under the gutter, is my slideout. I would have to have them only on the slideout portion of the RV, which is a little smaller than my awning, but it would make the wiring much easier to the porch light.

Then there is the controller on some of these units, that looks a bit large, not sure what to do with that.

Yes, I forgot about some of those. HMMM? There would have to be some way of doing it.

Plus the fact, if the lights are mounted under the awning rail, they can be used with the awning retracted.

That`s a good point. didn`t think of that.

Take a look at this link In it are a couple links to other posts and videos of the results. He used two different methods on 2 different awnings... one with a brush/slip ring setup and the other with a wire in the awning seam . I will be trying that also
  • Much easier to attach it to the bottom of the gutter where the awning slides into.
  • What would really be nice is if you could run the power up the arm and into the roller without having a wire hang.

They do it with the horn button on a steering wheel.

Just ordered LED strip for the roller, I will us the power outlet on the porch light
  • maybe at the switch..but not at the motor
if you figure out how to make that work ..please post it here

for the lights to have power, the motor would have to have power
