Leveling jacks question

We just purchased our first motorhome and I have some questions about the leveling jacks.

I have read that many times using the "auto" will put the front tires off the ground. I was told by my salesperson to not leave the front tires off the ground. I am going to run to the local hardware store to get some wood to put under the front tires if needed. I do have a few questions.

1) When using auto mode, is it normal for the motorhome to really jerk around. Scared the wife when I used the auto button. It's probably normal and I'm just not used to it but the motorhome would lean on way, then the other and it was not smooth!

2) When using manual mode, is it possible to bring the jacks down a little without having to use the "retract jacks" switch? I got the front a little high while playing with the jacks and wanted to lower the jacks a little. The only way I saw to do this was to push the retract jacks button but this also retracts the back jacks.

3) When the front tires are off the ground, I am assuming I would need to go a little higher than level on the front using the manual mode and then put in my wood under the tires, and then hit "retract" and then start the leveling process again?

I have had a travel trailer the last 6 years so these leveling jacks are new to me.
