I've been through a few cycles on this issue, here's the one before my current solution:

I've since replaced the 2x6s with old 3/4" plywood, cut into 11x18 rectangles. I carry about 7 or 8 of these, and a couple 8x8s if I have a side-to-side incline. The plywood has held up well considering the amount of use... including when I had the entire MH setting on jack stands:
These store in the same container as did the 2x6 blocks.
