Loss on sale of motorhome

Remember, NADA is not that accurate. The problem with NADA and novice users of NADA, they find their RV and then the ADD all the so called options to get what they think is their price. NADA price has already taken that into account. Automobiles in NADA are different.
People argue this all the time, but it is true. Doug (works at a RV Dealership for 35 years).

If you really got 27% off the actual MSRP not some fabricated number presented to you I do not believe it is as dire as the 30% number people have seized on is a little to negative.

I bought my last mh for 25% off MSRP and I sold it for around 36% less than I paid roughly 4 years later as a Trade.

How do I know my trade was not inflated is a GOOD question. But the new MH was 28.5% off MSRP so I think both purchase and trade numbers were real.

I traded and probably could have done slightly better selling my self, but people like buying from dealers imo. So hardly worth my effort imo.

Not knowing condition, negotiating skill, or luck it is hard to say, but first year is the worst. My GUESS is 15 to 20% below what you paid.

We bought ours (a 32' Georgetown Class A) used (it was 8 years old) and sold it four years later for less than half what we paid for it.

I think the best answer to your question is to do some research as to the value of the MH. I would look at some of the guides on value and also review some of the for sale ads and see what the unit is selling for.

Responses are probably correct.

If you are not in a hurry, start High & continue to lower the price over time until you begin getting phone calls.

I agree on that 30% figure. a buyer would expect to get that 25-30 % off the price of a new one so would want an additional chunk off for a used one. that price you got 27% off could have been inflated also and you could have gotten only 15-20% off, depends on what MSRP :) the dealer had put on it.

That number could be right. The fact is with all things being equal, people would rather buy from a dealer than a private party. You have dealer support, they can usually arrange financing at better rates, and you are less likely to get ripped off by a dealer. So if you price this motorhome too high, a potential buyer is just going to go buy a brand new one instead. The fact that you got 27% off MSRP means nothing as the next buyer can get that deal too. If you buy new, once you take it off the lot it does become worth a whole lot less money.

I think the other posters are close to correct. I would expect to pay a minimum of 30% less for a year or two year old used model (2016s are going to appear any day now) than I would have to pay for a brand new one. Warranty is less (or gone), a bit harder to finance, no ability to trade,and in the back of everyone's mind they would worry you are dumping it because of problems. Sorry, but there really isn't a silver lining to selling an almost new used anything.

Actually, no that is pretty standard. You haven't provided any specifics about what you have. If you have a rare unit with desirable options you can get more, if you have a common model you will get less especially if the manufacturer has added features to the next model year. BTW you will get more if you sell before the 2016 model year units come out.

Here is a bit of an anecdote. I paid $115K for a 2014 model Class C motorhome in 2013 but the dealer "over-allowed" on my trade by about $20K bringing my net cost down to about $95K. It had major safety related problems and I got tired of dealing with them. I sold it for $70K and low NADA book was $63K. We didn't even use it a year. Some offers I got were in the $50K range. It had about 8K miles and looked in mint condition because we only used it 5 times. I detailed it so it looked front line ready. This means I lost about $30K on the sale of the motorhome which is what I expected about 30% less than I paid. Unfortunately, that is the way it is. My unit was a very common model and most people will naturally gravitate to new units rather than pay similar for a used unit with no warranty.
