For what it's worth, we have averaged about 7.8 mpg with our 42 ft. tag-axle coach at 40,039 lbs with almost 70,000 miles on the odometer. A tag axle does weigh more but it also offers more stability and a larger cargo carrying capacity.
Since you will be full timing, you will be carrying more than a part-time RV family. Your whole life will be in that coach so go as big as you can afford and with the most slide-outs. Also, a tag will give you an extra set of tires of you need to rotate to the front.
Once, we received a bad alignment (about 5 yrs. ago) and I didn't notice it until about 2,000 miles later. The inside of both front tires were wearing faster than the rest of the tire. So, I got an excellent alignment at TAFA in Nashville and rotated the tag tires to the front to have a fresh set with very little wear.
Last year, I bought a whole new set of new tires and went through the Michelin FMCA program for extra savings.

ON EDIT: I JUST CHECKED MY ALADDIN COMPUTER AND THE AVERAGE IS 7.8 OVER 68,700 MILES (originally I listed 7.2).
