Mid 90's F53 Tranny Shift Cable (update)

I've resurrected this older post of mine because I thought I would share my fix.
For those who are unaware, finding a tranny shift cable for this era moho is next to impossible. Ford has discontinued production and there are none in stock anywhere in America.
Many of us have seen the offering on eBay where a 3rd party vendor is advertising a "direct replacement" cable with a caveat that a minor modification was required. I've emailed this seller countless times asking for a description of this minor mod but was given no answers.
Since my moho has been out of commision for 2 months, I decided to purchase this direct replacement cable and figure out the modificatiion for myself. The installation went well and works like new. Here is the modification needed;

I know tough to see, but simply, this is the left side of the dash beside the steering column where the OEM cable was originally anchored. The fix was to fab an "S" shaped standoff bracket which provided an 1" standoff from the original mounting point. I used 1" aluminum flat bar and bent it into shape. Attachment to the original bracket was made easy by an unused 1/4" hole pre-stamped into the OEM bracket. Using a 1/4" x 1/2" stainless bolt and nut made the connection very easy. The top end of the "S" required a 1/2" hole to be drilled which allowed the new cable to slip through. Using lock washers inside both locking nuts allowed me to adjust the distance needed between the shift lever ball stud to the cables eyelet.
At the Trans. Range Sensor end, no modification was needed other then using 2 large diameter fender washers inside of the 2 locking nuts.

So happy to be back on the road again!
  • Don't use photo bucket HTML links.. copy and use the 'direct image' link , then use img tab in advanced post

Here is an example of what the picture coding needs to look like...Just replace the "((" and the"))" with square brackets

For those of you 1997 F53 owners in need of this cable: It was made by Cablecraft Motion Control with p/n 314 VTT 3-108". This p/n is specific for the 1997 model year, as the length of the cable is different for other model years.
  • Hi Lt46,
Saw your posting re shift cable.
I have a 99 F53, and the shifting is very stiff, so I figure I need a new cable.
Do you have a link to that seller on eBay that you got your cable from?
    Thanks,
    Dan
  • If somebody else needs a cable, call these people, they have made me some cables for my obsolete AMC and Rambler cars. If you have a picture of the ends and a length they can mage a lot of different combination.

  • Thanks!I have spent hours trying to find a replacement gear shift cable for my 99 F53.
    Much appreciate it.

  • Excellent info. I may need one on my bounder (a bit of rust forming and have been sweating for a couple of years). The yota is stick shift so I'm good there.
  • hi lt46:
I want to order the Cablecraft cable you mention in your post. I believe it will work perfect in my 99 F53, as the length is the same (108"). My question: what type of ends did you order for the cable? I have a 1/4" diameter ball at the tranny and at the shift lever inside the cab.
    thanks for your help.

This (hopefully) takes you to the eBay site that I ordered my tranny cable from.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/FORD-F53-F6TZ7E395AA-SHIFTER-CABLE-MOTORHOME-CHASSIS-1997-108-INCHES-LONG-USA-/322319799430?hash=item4b0bc1d486

Regarding the end links. Yes, this cable has the eyelet ends that snap over the existing ball stud that Ford used. The eBay photo is decieving because it shows some type of stub attached on the end. That stud is actually a replacement ball stud should you need to replace what Ford provided. This stud simply pulls out of the eyelet.

Using the cacblecraft p/n I supplied will get you exactly what you need. I will caution you the ENSURE the correct length of cable needed by measuring the existing cable. There are 2 different cables offered by this seller and they also caution buyers to ensure the exact length needed.
    Best of luck.
