Mixing oil types (5w-20 mixed with 10w-30)

My RV has the ford v-10 in it and I noticed today the oil is closer to the "low" level than the "full" level on the dip stick. I have a few quarts of 10w-30 (might be 5w-30) but I was going to top it off before I head out for north Florida tomorrow (3-4hr drive) then when I get there I plan on changing the oil to a synthetic 5w-20. Will mixing damage anything? I do not know what's currently in the oil in the engine at the moment.

Pour in a quart and go. Just to get it well above the low mark. Remember, any oil is better than no oil. Always.

If it was me . . . and it is still between the low and the high mark on the dipstick and you are planning to change it soon I wouldn't bother adding any. A 3-4 hour trip (especially at this time of year) isn't going to effect the oil level in any substantial way.

It's on the lower side of the stick like right at the low line on the dip stick, still has quite a bit of room to be at the full or middle
    Mark.

Many (or most) owners manuals (Fords included) will tell you that as long as your oil is between the min and the max marks that you are fine and that you only need to add oil when the oil level is at or below the MIN mark.
  • Top it off with what you have and don't worry about it.
I've mixed different weights and oils for years in many different engines with no problems.
  • Better to put it in and not know than no run it low. Unless the cans say so, in most cases all engine oils mix with no problem. Of course, my answer will probably generate ten pages of both do's and don'ts, so be prepared. only thing, if your oil in it now has some fantastic type of miracle magic in it. adding something different might dilute the magic, especially if you believe all the advertising hype. I don't like to mis regular and synthetic oils, but both do the same job, and are designed to be compatiable.
