MSW

Hi All.

We have all sorts of MSW Converters, that will handle just about anything. But like Roy did, he bought an AIM's 600 watt PSW Converter. We went even a bit lower.
We bought an AIM's 300 Watt PSW Converter. Roy does a lot of Ham Radio stuff. We didn't feel the need for a 600 watt PSW Converter. For our use, a 300 watts AIM's PSW Converter is more than enough to protect the important things in our Motorhome. Our TV's and Stero is really the only good things we need to make sure is protected.
Now we do have a 5.5 KW, Gas Built-In Generator in our Motorhome. Now if I want to make sure I want the bigger stuff protected, I can always hook-up our Twin Honda EU2000i's, and Paralla Kit and Extended Tank, since the Honda's put out such a nice clean power sorce.

We also have uses for Inverters also, as some of our stuff use's Inveters and some of our stuff uses Converters. Having both Converters,and Inverters, comes in handy, more that you think at least for us. I have stuff from the past 46+ years as RV'ers.

Thanks for all the replies and just for your information I ended replacing my inverter with a 1500 watt Kinae MW1215 with a remote for $149.00 The tv's work great and so does everything else . PSW not needed

With TRUE sine wave inverters, the list of things that may not (or will not) work properly is very short: Anything needing more power than the inverter can invert.

With MSW's. the list is much larger, including all forms of audio, video or radio receiving gear, And TV's are all of those (Audio, Video, Radio).

The key word is "MAY" they may not work properly, May exhibit reduced performance, or.. on the other hand, they MAY work perfectly.

You do not know till you try it.

AM radio.. Is generally a bust with MSW. but who listens to AM any more?

FWIW - I think the OP needs to consider future uses of electricity. As technology is evolving it seems that the newer devices are requiring "cleaner" power such as a PSW. Right now all of your elctronics are working with MSW, but what about future purchases? Why chance it? Invest a few extra dollars now rather than wishing you would had in a year or two.

The transformer type are the problem. Mine draws a whopping 1591 watts (what on earth were they thinking?).

Seems one big issue is with the operation of microwaves using a MSW unit. What are the thoughts on the two types of microwaves with regard to inverters... transformer-powered magnetron units vs inverter microwaves? Does one type work any better or worse than the other? Most newer microwaves are inverter type now.

Really the only significant change for increased wattage would be the DC feed wires to the battery bank.

To me, paying the price difference between a MSW and a PSW inverter is worth it. With a known good PSW inverter, even at load, the waveform will be a sine wave. With a MSW device, who knows what it might look like.

A PSW inverter's price difference is definitely cheaper than a new laptop or iPad.

If my MSW quit I would replace it with an upgrade ;-) to PSW. That said, my MAC, its power supply and the Samsung 197 have worked without complaint for years on MSW.

All of his wiring, including the output circuits fed by the inverter will be based on that. Going to a larger unit would require lots of changes.
