Need advice on when to fill fresh water

I am getting ready to leave Kentucky in a few day to go to Alabama for 3 weeks. My 2014 Thor Windsport has been winterized by blowing air thru the lines. The high temperature will be in the 20's on the day I plan to leave. I would like to put some fresh water in it before I leave just to fill up the hot water heater and to have some water available for the two day trip. I could just carry some gallons on water with me and wait until I get down south but I really would like to check out the system before I leave. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have been known to carry water, if you need hot water a 20 or 30 cup "Party Perk" such is used in many offices can make a great water heater.. Heats it to around 210 degrees in fact.
  • I would fill the tank, lines and HWH and not worry about it. At night run the furnace and you should not have any issues. Takes a long time for water to freeze, its not like its sitting outside without any protection. We use our MH in all seasons and right now in Id, where we have been down to -10 and doing fine.

play it safe go empty, I know lots of do but there just lucky.

Not luck at all. Some of us own motorhomes that are designed to keep every thing from freezing, while running the furnace. My 95 Bounder has spent the night at -7°F with out freezing. So the OPs question it unanswerable with out knowing how his RV is constructed.

  • The weather looks like it,s going to warm up in a few days.I'd fill the water tank, run water through all the lines ,light the water heater, and hit the road! While driving I don,t think anything will freeze. When you spend the night turn the heat on. JMO
  • We go to Mammoth Lakes every year skiing. Temps can get down to 0 and stay below freezing during the day. We keep the furnace on and never had the water freeze. We use the grey and black sparingly as that has frozen. We do keep the water tank filled.
  • Filling the FW tank is fine before you leave. Filling up the lines, HWH, etc, will require you to keep the rig above freezing until you get out of the cold weather. So, you'll have to leave the furnace running with the t-stats set fairly low (55 or so), or risk having problems.

  • I wouldn't add any water to your tank until you are in warmer temperatures where it only goes below freezing for a few hours at night.

When we are on the road in freezing weather, we take several one gallon milk cartons of water to use to flush the toilet, make coffee, etc. As soon as the weather is more favorable, I fill the tank and use the system. But, we have heated holding tanks and our coach is supposed to be useable in freezing weather. I just don't like taking the chance. Good luck.
  • Hi,

Warm it up well before you leave. Get everything else stowed away. Add water, and drive. Keep the furnace on, until the night time temperatures stay above freezing.
  • We travel every Winter in temps down to zero. I always keep my fresh water tank close to being filled. If just left alone it would probably take a long time for a full fresh water tank to freeze in 20 degree temps.
I use a 100 watt light bulb in my wet compartment and I have never had any tanks or water lines freeze in temps down to zero. We also use electric heaters in the coach so the furnace does not blow heat around our fresh water tank like with many coaches. I do not hook up any hoses or sewer lines unless it is to fill or drain tanks and have never had anything freeze up on me.
