  • I have the same issue from time to time if I neglect to lube the pivot bolt for the gear plate. My steps would either be out when they refused to retract or V/V. I just remove the big pivot bolt with an allen wrench, clean the bolt with crocus cloth and the bore hole with a wire brush, lube good and re-install. This has always solved my step issue.
  • My older Bounder has the fuse for my steps inside the electronic box in the battery compartment. Mine holds several fuses and circuit breakers as well as the coach and chassis battery solenoids.
  • Appreciate the replies. Still working through problem. Obtained a 3 step stool, so the DW may step out after Sun gets up high. Cool 37 around 7:00am.
  • On our previous mh, 2009 bounder 35h, our steps wouldn't retract. We could hear the motor trying.
It ended up that it needed lubricant. We used Blaster( not WD 40), then they worked.
  • D.E. has some good advice right there.

FYI, my Fleetwood two step electric has an in-line fuse around 12" from the control board (attached to the underside of the step mounting).

AND another 5 AMP fuse under the dash. Probably because there's a 12V source under the dash that feeds one of the two step switches. If you have a dash switch, you might have a fuse under the dash.

The in-line fuse near the steps came from the step manufacturer.

My point is that you could have two fuses.
  • Welcome to one of the most discussed problems on the forum. There are a lot of things said about what I expect are your steps(Kwikee)and so very well documented on these forums. If the DW is stuck inside that might be good but your outside and that's bad.

Joking aside, if the steps are stuck in the retracted position at least you can move if you can't fix it.

I would try to remove the cotter key in the clevis pin, control arm and then do my testing. When the clevis pin is removed there is nothing holding up the steps. Something tied around the steps or under the steps to prevent them from extending an ruining your day are necessary.

With that done it is easy to check voltages and determine your problem. If you do not have the manual for your steps, search on line for Kwikee Manual #888. It is very comprehensive and you'll be able to isolate the problem. Fixing it is another thing. Look for an added on fuse holder anywhere there is a place to get to a constant 12 volt source.

Good luck and use the Search engine here on the forums. Lots of stuff.
  • Tap lightly on gear- control box below step as you open and close the door with a hammer sometimes a small part gets stuck in the gears. If this works you may need a new motor in the future. Napa has them.
Mine was a Ford Taurus window motor.

    Pogoil.
  • There is a fuse. It is supposed to be in the fuse location under the dash. On my Southwind, the fuse was actually located inside the converter box...located in the hatch over the propane tank. Took the mobile repair service in Palmer, Alaska an hour to locate! Why Fleetwood would put it there? Who knows.
