I have no idea what the price difference is between a gas and a dp starter are. I did have a starter on a dp replaced a few years back, and as I remember it wasn't that bad. I had an 05 Revolution 40E with the C-9 400hp Cat engine, it was a great motorhome with three slides. I sold it and went back to a gas motorhome which I originally had. That was a mistake. I sold the gas rig and bought an 04 Revolution 38B with 2 slides and a Cummins 350hp.
The Revolutions from 04 back (how far back, I don't know) were built on the Freighliner Chassis and had Cummins 350hp engines. In 05 they went to the Cat 350 hp engine for a short time. I don't know if that was on a Freightliner or Sparten Chassis. Around mid year 05 they were built on a Sparten Chassis and had the C-9 400 hp Cat engine.
Go test drive the 3 motor homes you've narrowed your choice down to. Drive them on all road conditions you can find, including up and down grades. Another plus for a DP is the exhaust brake. As far as maintenance costs. I get my oil changed at Speedco and it's around $200. I think the cost for a gas will be about 1/2. but the oil change interval on a gas motor home is about 1/2 of the dp also, so pretty much balances out. When comparing apples to apples ......parts wise, diesel engines are probably more expensive. However, how often do you really do repairs on an engine? Good luck in your decision making.
This mid year thing you mention might explain what's going on in the specs., since it mentions the LE and a C9 Cat being on a Liberty chassis and the std. with a C7 Cat on the Spartan.
PPL's ad says C9 Spartan, https://d2k1k1f5tri8mt.cloudfront.net/brochure/2005_revle_f.pdf so....
By the way, how does the Liberty chassis compare with the Spartan and do both have the side radiator?
More I think about it, the Revolution, which I've been admiring for a long time, seems to be the one or just stay with our old relic and be done with it.
