NJ MV Inspection for your big gas class C now exempt.

Funny thing happened today at my state motor vehicle inspection station. I pulled up my 31" Greyhawk for its bi-annual inspection and the service tech told me not to bother. Apparently, effective May 1st. Any gas engine passenger vehicle model year 2013 or older that exceeds 14'001 lbs GVW or 2007 or older exceeding 8'501 lbs GVW are now exempt from getting inspections (see link below).
I'm not sure I'm entirely thrilled about this as most of my driving is done out of state and having just plain glass where a state inspection sticker should be might not go over well with out of state law enforcement. NJ gas RV owners that meet the criteria will now have to keep an exemption certificate with them. God forbid if I start getting pulled over all the time now out of state with no sticker.

Don't sweat the out of state issue. As soon as you get clear of Megapolis, vehicle inspection gets very rare.

Thanks Matt. The days of long hair and driving an uninspected 72 Ford Galaxie are long behind me. Hence, was pulled over often then in or out of state.

Interesting info. I see nothing in the link about an exemption certificate. Were you directed to the motor vehicle office to get one?

On that link true, no info. The inspection tech told us to call the agency. He handed DW a slip of paper with a number to call. She called it promptly and they said the certificate will be in our mailbox within 5 days.

I didn't see anything about an exempt certificate either. I've been driving around for over 2 years with a red "REJECTED" sticker from NJ on my '84 (failed for HC and NOx). I scraped it off this past weekend - no longer required. It looks like they exempted pretty much anything pre-OBDII.

No out of state law enforcement is going to stop you because your NJ vehicle has not been inspected. It is not their jurisdiction to enforce NJ state inspections.

A related story - we lived in NJ before moving to GA (we grew up in NJ). Both of our vehicles had expired NJ inspection stickers - never bothered to take them off. NJ was still doing full inspections back then. We were in our home town in NJ, driving from my wife's parents to my parents (a 2 mile drive). We passed a local LEO driving the opposite direction. She swings around and pulls me over. Her explanation for pulling us over - we had an expired inspection sticker and out of state plates - she had to see what was going on. I asked her if it was illegal to move out of NJ? She didn't like that.

  • Maryland doesn't have a state inspection except when a car is sold/purchased. Florida doesn't either.
