Norcold 1200 Fans

Ours is 9 years old and worked well on a 5 week trip to Fla in May. Turned it on LP yesterday to get ready for a trip. checked later and found it off, showing "nc" (somewhat cold in the freezer section). Did the reset thing last night and on it went. Had an "nc" last year, and the reset thing fixed it. Don't hear the fans running now though. Should the fans be running? It's in the 80s now but was close to 100 yesterday.

Also, can anyone tell me how to reset after the second "nc" shutdown? Leaving for a trip on Monday and getting worried. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,

  • You can get 12 VDC muffin fans at most any electronics store. They take very little power, so you generally just tap into a nearby 12 VDC source if wiring from scratch. I use a switch on mine rather than a thermostat-- your choice.
  • Thanks "deadbeat" for the idea of adding a 12 volt fan in the back. Question is" where can I buy a fan that will fit in there, and a 120/12 volt adapter. I'd like to put a fan in there before our trip in August. Easier than pulling out the fridge.

Thanks everyone else for replying. Doug
  • Unless the refer is in a slide room, you must PULL the refer out of the cabinet to both test the Fan Tstat and test the fans. There is no way to test without pulling the refer. On a unit as old as yours, it is best to replace BOTH Fans and the tstat if you pull the refer. If it is hotter than 70 degrees outside, the back of the refer is getting past the 160 degrees if the fans are not running. Doug
  • I've had the recalls done prior to May 2012. The fridge worked fine during our last 3 week outing at Myrtle Beach in May. Now it's a lot hotter and again getting ready for our annual August trip. Last summer we cancelled because I felt the fridge was not getting cold fast enough, and was failing. I may have been too quick to judge, because it seemed to work fine later during cooler weather. I'm thinking if the cooling fans had been operating we may have been OK.

Can anyone here tell me how to function-test the fans now to see if they're working? My book says the thermostat switch in on the first fin, where ever that is (probably out of reach from the access opening).
If I could simulate 160+ degrees there, that might do it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • As it was explained to me as I was having my Amish cooler installed. The n c cold means that it has not dropped in temperature in x amount of time (usually 6 hours). If you had the thermocouple recalled done, check to see if you have the red l.e.d. light. They are finding these units have about a 2 1/2 year lifespan now. You can disconnect the d.c. power from the thermocouple and put it directly to the board if that is the problem.
  • This doesn't answer your question directly, but have you had the two recalls done? So many of these units have had problems it isn't funny. The next failure on mine will result in the replacement of the cooling unit with an Amish cooling unit. I can't wait!
