How ironic, we were there about two weeks ago as well. Here's what I saw.
My wife and walked from the RV park to Antoines for dinner on Friday evening. That's prime time in NOLA. After dinner, we walked along Bourbon Street and the surrounding areas. It was as chaotic as I've ever seen. There were certainly what appeared to be gangs or groups of organized people scattered about but there were police at every corner. In fact, I've never seen so many police in one place. We elected to take a cab back to the RV park.
I normally visit NOLA in the summer where the smell of rotting garbage, cigarette smoke, urine and odors not worthy of mention are virtually unbearable, but when I visited a couple of weeks ago, the smells were not very strong.
I'd say if you you like to drink, jazz music, or cheesy sex shows, you have to visit. Also, if you simply like people watching and nightlife, that's the place to go.
I also agree with the other poster who said to take a cab back to the RV park. I enjoyed our visit and hope you don't let the risk scare you away.
I was in Ft Lauderdale two weeks ago. We were stopped at a traffic light and a pan handler started banging on our windows and shouting at us. First time I've ever seen this happen anywhere. I wish there were police on corners in Ft Lauderdale.
So it goes to show you this stuff goes on everywhere.
