Oil analysis of Ford V10 and Mobil 1

Thought you folks would want to see this oil analysis after a cross country thru the western mtn ranges. Mobil 1 EP 5-20 @5500 miles. Did the job but I wouldn't go over 7500miles on it. I consider this severe duty use.

COMMENTSSTEVE: Thanks for the notes about the towing and hard use through the mountains. Your V-10 handledthat well. For such a new engine, we honestly expected more residual wear-in metal since that can take awhile to wash out, but it's not here. Universal averages show typical wear levels for this type of engine afterabout 4,400 miles on the oil and this engine compares nicely. Silicon is probably harmless sealers washingout, but you can always check the air filtration system just to be safe. The TBN is 3.3 showing activeadditive left. Try 7,500 miles next and check back.

  • Guess it is a good idea to have it checked. Of course for the price of the check I can change my oil 2 times. Well not quite.

On my 2002 V10 had over 110k miles. Changed every 4k miles. No noticeable oil consumption at 110k miles. I towed stock trailers loaded with cows. Pretty heavy towing. That is about $400 in oil at 110k miles. Putting that in the equation plus I used over $27k in gas for those miles. Oil is cheap. I change it often. On my MH I Change after every trip. Miles doesn't matter. I have 14k miles. I have put more than $6k in gas in it. I've done 4 oil changes about $80. Very interesting to know though. Mobile makes good oil Ford makes good V10s. I use standard Ford oil.

I can remember when Mobile first came out with Mobile 1. Many thought synthetic oil would ruin the engine. Now everyone uses synthetic oil.
  • I had my 2000 V-10 oil tested during the 130,000 miles I had it. Last 90k were using Mobil 1 5/20. Test sample and new filter every 7500, changed when sample came back with recommendation to change - usually after 35,000 to 45,000 on the oil. Spit a plug at 127k. Had NAPA shop insert stainless sleeves in all plug holes. No visible wear on cams or lifters. Had valves polished while down. Compression same as new after heads back on.

Note: I was using an Amsoil dual filter system, which included a large bypass filter. Change that filter every 25k miles. Takes a long time to wear Mobile 1 out, even in severe service.
  • Excellent report. I used Blackstone once and it was well worth the 30 dollars.
