Oil Consumption-2011--V10

I have noticed excessive oil consumption, 1 1/2 quarts in 3300 miles. I come to find out there is Ford Technical Service Bulletin out for this problem--TSB 13-6-9. This is just an FYI
  • Thanks. Its good idea to keep an eye on it. When I took my MH to dealer for the Michelin recall there was another guy in for the same thing. The dealer on its own noticed the oil down two+ quarts on his vehicle and initiated a consumption test.

I'm going on 2K mile trip in a few weeks and I made a note to pack some extra oil. In the past it burns about a quart in 3K miles-which to me is pretty normal.

I see on the bulletin you mentioned in your post it is one quart per 3K miles:

If the bulletin above is correct, it seems pretty generous on Ford's part to fix an engine which burns a quart in nearly 3K miles. I'm not sure I'd want an engine pulled for such consumption-always room for error in that operation. Maybe if oil was headed into one cylinder and fouling the plug?

Best summary I could find (I do not have any access to paid accounts to check the TSB):

FORD Certain 2011-13 E-Series large vans may use excessive amounts of oil. In T.S.B. 13-6-9 issued on June 13, Ford said that consumption of more than a quart in 3,000 miles had been found on some vehicles with 5.4- or 6.8-liter V-8s. Removing the engine — yes, that’s Ford’s directive — and replacing the valve seals should stop the oil usage.
  • tpi--i called tech support at ford to get the TSB. the guy told me, but i don't remember what he said. all i remember is he said mine was excessive. Here is the number for motorhome tech support----800.444.3311. Hope this helps.
  • Thanks for the info. Does anyone know what the cutoff point for Ford on what is excessive?
  • pauldub is right. the first thing that needs to be done by a Ford service center is to do a consumption test. This involves an oil change and a mark is put on the dip stick. Then drive 500 miles and have it checked again, then again at 1000 miles. If consumption is seen, the engine is removed and valve seals are placed.
  • We have a fleet of Ford V10 trucks at work. Every one of them burns oil. The V8's too. It's the Triton engine. Be careful of your spark plugs too.

Bad idea on the V10. I'll sound like a diesel at startup, and will starve both the timing chain tensioner and the bottom end. The only way I would consider this is in conjunction with a pre-oilig system.
