Onan Generator replacement

Been having issues with the generator for a while. It finally quit working and RV shop says it will cost more to rebuild than replace. My question is, does anyone know of a place that sells used or rebuilt generators? Can i replace the onan with something else? I live in Houston. Thanks!!!

  • Here are a few I found in Google under "Motor Rewind Houston, TX." There are plenty more if none of these are close to you. I realize distance in CT is nothing like TX.

I had a rodent problem in my previous MOHO that damaged the rotor. I was doing the repair myself and Onan wanted $1800 just for the part. I found a shop that repaired the damage windings and applied a new (and better) conformal coating for $140. Some shops may not be interested in removing the genset from the rig, so if you are not up for doing that yourself perhaps you can work a deal with your normal service center for just the removal/reinstallation. Good luck.

The generator portion of your genset is just like a old electric motor. They have windings and armatures which which can be rebuilt (re-wound).

  • I would also check with a motor rewind shop to get it rebuilt. Typically they are much less expensive than a dealer or RV shop and quite often use better quality parts than the OEM's. Good luck.

  • Find a Cummings repair shop and they can do the repair. I took mine to Cummings in Kenly, NC and they removed it and put it on test bench and did diagnostic and then repair then ran it for a day to verify repair.

I'd stick with the ONAN and you've already been provided with a link for used one's. Just be glad that you obviously already have enough space for one of these. Generac replacements with an Onan are near to impossible with many coaches.
  • Go to "www.marxrv.com/rvsalvage.htm" and you will find a very long list of rv salvage yards. I have contacted "Visone Auto mart" a couple of times but have not purchased anything. You can look online at what they have but it's probably better to call.
