Some disturbing news. Of the 16 Million of the Greatest Generation who served in WWII, only about 1 million are still alive. The Pearl Harbor Survivor's Club now has less than a dozen members left, so they have now disbanded. They say it is extremely difficult to make the journey to the USS Arizona, one of them saying that more to the point, who will still be alive next year? This year only 9 attended. They drank a toast of champagne in glasses that are copies of the original glasses on board the ship, and one of those glasses is to be taken down to (I believe) Gun Turret 4, where the ashes of deceased shipmates are interred.
More: The park service that maintains the USS Arizona is apparently not doing a good job. Its deteriorating, and is covered with bird poo.
My father was in the Army and posted at Schofield Barracks in 1937, but was gone from there before the attack. One of my sisters has his photographs. He and my mother went on vacation once to visit the place about 30 years ago. I have yet to visit Hawaii - a bucket list item.
