Possible Allison Transmission overfill

I have a 2006 Tiffin Phaeton C7 Cat with Allison Transmission. I had the filters and fluid changed about 1500 miles ago. I noticed the fluid seemed to go to the top of the stick (above the cold level start check notch) or a little over when cold, but was right at the top or just slightly above the HOT full mark when at operating temperature and level on the levelers. I had not done the electronic check until the last leg of a short trip recently. The check said I had +2 quarts even though my manual checks (each time I travel) just show full or maybe a tad over full. Should I still try and drain a quart or 2 to correspond to the electronic check? Previous checks before this recent service always showed FULL when I was in the middle of the range between COLD and HOT .....
  • For precise answer I would contact Allison.
I bought couple of vehicles with overfill transmission and they simply spit fluid when it got hot.
It wasn't pretty picture as ATF spilled on exhaust at freeway speeds made quite nice cloud.
Personally I would not loose sleep over it. You drove it already.
  • You said it was right at the top full mark when at operating temps. That means no problem. You cannot judge by the cold level.
  • Thanks for the advice! I WILL call Allison. I have been told that the electronic check is more accurate, but the lack of any fluid spitting or on the ground makes me think it's probably OK .... Thanks again
  • I just talked to Allison. The technician in Atlanta indicated that since the COLD level check showed way high that the electronic check was most probably giving me the more accurate reading on fluid level, and suggested that I drain off a couple of quarts .... but did not think there was any issue if I hadn't experienced any problems or abnormalities in shifting or external fluid leaks or spitting .... guess I'll drain a couple off .... Thanks!!
  • I had the same question about which to believe, the dip stick of the electronic method on the pad. I called Allison and got same snswer. Tech told me the stick was to get approximate level when changing / filling. The electronic on the pad is the accurate one and the one that should be used. (Reason I called was because a place that changed my fluid was telling me the opposite. They may be out there)
  • Exactly my dilemma .... On all my previous tranny services, the stick and the electronic had always been the same, so I never questioned it. So this time when the electronic said it was overfilled and the stick said full, I questioned the dealer that did the maintenance. He said believe the stick ... so I've let it go since the service, but now I'm going to believe the electronics .... Thanks to all you guys that helped me out ...

Sounds like the dealer did not want to deal with it or he has a rectal cranial inversion. I would not go back but hey that is me.

There are three types of Allison repair facilities one that is authorized to change the fluid and filters, the next is one that can change the fluid and filters and do work on the transmission on outside components then there is the third type they can tear down and operate on the transmission or completly rebuild it.

I had a problem with the electronic check on my tranny and Allison took that as a serious issue and had me take it to a repair warranty dealer. They went over how to check the fluid with the stick so I would have a safe start (I already knew how) but they went over it a couple of times. They also stated that one should check the stick prior to running them when things get hot enough check the electronic test. The level on the stick will be up high I think above all marks. It is worse to run over filled than low within boundaries of course.
When I change mine I will put in 20 quarts and then check the stick then run it and check the electronic level and then add 2 quarts so far so good.

You should make the dealer remove the 2 quarts after all it is his mess up.

  • Thanks for the info ..... the dealer I have used is a warranty dealer for all different motors, but I'm not sure about the tranny. There is an Allison warranty dealer across town and I may have to call them again, even though they acted ignorant about working on motorhomes. I was aware of the startup check and do it, but have always used the dipstick (cold and hot) as my go/no go check, only occasionally using the electronic check. That was my mistake ....I'm questioning all the service they have done for me now ....Thanks again!
  • W. W. Williams http://www.wwwilliams.com/locations_index.cfm is the Allison distributor shop in Birmingham, Montgomery and Atlanta. The guys in the Montgomery location went way above the call to make us comfortable during our 12-day boondocking experience in their Camp Parking Lot.
  • I have been by the WW Williams in Birmingham. I will try them if I need to again. It is convenient to have a place that will do all the chassis, motor and tranny work in the same place and I don't think that WW Williams does Freightliner Chassis work. I did get 2 quarts drained from the filler tube with a vacuum pump and it looks close to where it should be on the manual dipstick .... I need to get a short road trip to check the electronic dipstick .... Thanks
