Potentially purchasing 1999 Roadtrek 200 Versatile

I am looking at purchasing a 1999 Roadtrek Versatile 200 with a Chevy 350 with about 64K miles on it this coming weekend in Vidor, TX. The person I am buying it from says the only major issues that he is aware of are that it has severe paint issues and is dimpling and peeling, the Van AC is cycling and not working properly and that it will need 2 new tires. I am trying to find a RV shop in the area that can inspect the vehicle, and the owner is going to let us take it to a local RV park and spend the night in it before we purchase it.

I have a good mechanic that can work on the Van AC, so I am not that concerned about it, but will take that into account on the final pricing.

I read a forum post on another website that says that the paint issue might be from fiberglass outgassing, and that it would have to have a very deep sanding and repainting to fix, which could be expensive.

Can anyone please advise me about these issues or any other potential major issues that I should look into before purchasing this vehicle? It would be especially helpfully if anyone had advice about the 1999 Roadtrek Versatile 200 since it apparently is one of the models with a one piece fiberglass body added.

Thank you,

Robert

Also, lots of info in the archives, just do a search using the different "search criteria".
  • Robert,

    I bought a 2000 RT200 Popular which was built on a 1999 Chevy chassis.
The RT200 is really a unique vehicle built on a Chevy Express Cutaway chassis. When shopping for a B, we were mainly looking at the 190 model, but when we saw the 200, we fell in love with it. There is lots of room and the storage space is huge.
I haven't had paint issues and haven't heard about them being a problem with the 200. Maybe it spent most of its life down south and the heat and intense sun deteriorated the paint ... just guessing here.
As far as the mechanical side goes, some of the 350cid engines of that period had leaking lower intake manifold gaskets. Mine did and I had to have the manifold replaced. Once it has been replaced by a newer gasket design the problem probably won't come back. The old gaskets contained plastic and the Dexcool coolant contains a plasticizer ... doen't make for a good mix. So check to see if the LIM gasket has been replaced, and if not, make sure there is no coolant in the oil, and expect to change it eventually.
Other than that, the 350cid engine and the 4L80E transmission have a very good reputation.
On the house side, some people have had issues with a leaking rear window. Check to make sure there are no signs of infiltration. Also, watch out for problems with the rear side window operators. Check to see if they open smoothly. The operators cost next to nothing, but the windows have to be removed to replace them.
If the air conditioner in back is original, it might be on its last legs, but that is true for any 15 year RT.

Good luck, and if you buy a 200, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
  • Here is a link to the 1999 Roadtrek 200.

    http://www.roadtrek.com/_Uploads/manuals/Roadtrek_Owners_Manual_1999_Dodge_170-190_models_and%20Chevrolet_200_models.pdf

Read through and you will see what it is supposed to have and how it all works. This is what you would have received if you bought this new in 1999. The 200 was made until 2003. In 2004 the 210 was introduces and the 200 was dropped from the line.

With Roadtreks some parts that were and are used can only be obtained from the factory so you may want to contact them to find out what they still may stock for a 99 200 - if you find that there is anything needed.

You should also be able to locate on the Roadtrek site, a dealer with a service center that may be near you (or close enough) who is able to do a complete inspection of the RV that knows Roadtreks - of call RT customer service to find one.

There are also archived brochures on the Roadtrek website with specs.
  • I wanted to thank everyone for their advice. We ended up not getting it, but we will be looking at hopefully finding one that we can get.
