Problem with hazard warning lights

Can someone help me figure out the problem that I am having with my warning flashers on my 2004 Dutch Star 3126B DP on a frieightliner chasis. The flashers work but are flashing so rapidly that you can barely tell if the lights are flashing. I replaced the bulbs in the tail lights and the fuses for the tail lights tested okay with a test light. I was told that I may need to replace the flasher behind the dash. The only thing that I saw was a little square box on the left of the driver's side. Would that be the flasher? And, if you have any other troubleshooting tips, I would really appreciate them. Thanks.
  • One thing RV'ers should do is to activate the 4 way flashers and then go and listen for the relay clicking and NOTE where and which one it is for future reference. You then activate the turn signals and find and locate that relay also by listening and then noting where and which one it is. Will save a LOT of time and headache in the future. Because when they fail, you usually have NO operation and no noise to find out which one it is and they all look alike and will be in weird places. Doug
  • I didn't mention checking the front headlights so I did and the bulbs are good. The little black box that I thought was the flasher, it wasn't. When I turned on the flasher, I could hear it clicking under the dash. In order to get to it or to see it, I have to take off the section of the dash to the left of the steering column. I also looked for Headlight Control Module as mentioned to be a little black box on the floor/firewall under the steering column. I hope it's just going to be a flasher that I have to replace. Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions. I'll let everyone know how this works out.
  • I suspect the flasher itself is worn or overloaded.
Stop by Oriellys and get an electronic Heavy Duty flasher. It wont care about LED's, bulbs out or anything else.
  • Did you replace with LED's if so they will rabid flash unless you have correct flasher box. Just a thought

You should also hear it clicking in time with the flashing. Doug

  • Mine is also an '04 Freightliner XC Chassis. I had a similar problem (very rapid turn signal flashing, but no bad bulbs). What I discovered is that all of the lighting is controlled by the "Headlight Control Module". It is a black box on the floor/firewall under the steering column. It has two multiwire plugs in it. Once found it's easy to replace, bad news is that it's about a $400 item from Freightliner.
  • You did not mention checking the front bulbs. On my trucks when one bulb goes out, they turn signal or hazard flashes faster. Do each side turn signals flash properly. It could be as simple as a bulb burned out. I do not know if the item you are talking about is the flasher or not but I know all the ones I ever replaced were pull and replace. You might simply take it out and take it to an auto parts store for replacement. I think they are less then $10 so it is not a big deal. If that does not fix it, you simply have a spare as elec parts are typically not returnable.
