PSA - cracked wheel on 2012 F53

While doing a lugnut torque check I discovered a crack in the hub-plate of a rear wheel. The wheel has been replaced and the rest of my wheels checked for cracks. I filed a report with the NHTSA. Glad I didn't find it the hard way as the wheel failed!

  • Good find! Rare in the hub of steel wheels , . . . . but, . . . . it does happen. Did the crack clearly propagate to the other side?

  • The crack does go all the way through, but is only about 1-1/4" long on the back side. A band of rust on the powder-coat is what caught my eye.
  • Good eyes! It's not a Ford part number, but, my bet is that the stamping of that post production/serial number (whatever it is) on the face of the flange had something to do with the initiation of the crack. Glad you found it before the . . . . . "unthinkable" happens. The engineers at Ford should get to the bottom of this before "ASAP" happens. Hopefully it's just an exception rather than a pattern failure.

I could tell you what I think of Ford.. but well. (Not nice)

Remember the old ford Explorer Roll-a-matic.. They blamed Firestone.
Well the cause was low tire pressure. BY DESIGN.
To get a softer ride they said run the tire 5PSI below what Firestone specced.

Now new tires don't leak (much) so the owner has been a bit lax on checking tire pressure.. he's not 5 PSI low. he's 5 PSI period. first pot hole the rim slices the sidewall like hot butter and Mr. Point and Shoot driver stands on the brakes with both feet. A very bad idea.

    Flippitty flipptey time.

Any chance you could repost the picture, I can get it to open.

    Thank you.
  • Tried posting an image with the part number of the wheel, but can't seem to get it to work.

Bruce Brown, not sure why you can't see the picture. I resized it to make it smaller; maybe that will help?

Nice pic, (thank you) but I need to see the "other side" of the hub.
