Quality Class A makers

We are considering replacing our 30 ft Winnebago with a similar size one. Having had good luck with our present one, we are looking at another Winnebago. Are there other vendors/models we should look at?

  • Ok, now Bruce has one experience...better than the hear say of Passing Through, but still lacking in providing substantial knowledge as he is basing his opinion/expeerience on one coach... Do you believe that Newmar has not put out coaches that required the same amount of attention? As Effy mentioned above, you can find problem coaches in ANY brand....and I mean ANY brand. But to judge one brand on a very limited experience or hear say just isn't right.

When we bought our Phaeton, we were very close to buying a 43' Ventana....it was a nice coach but I had concerns. The Phaeton 42.5' coach with basically the same floor plan and price had more going for it. The Phaeton had a bigger engine with more HP and torque, a TV that you could actually look at straight on, fireplace, dishwasher, heated floors, endless hot water, bigger tires, more interior cabinet space....Granted, the Phaeton is probably closer to the Dutch Star than to the Ventana, but the prices were very similar. To date after two years and 10,000 miles, the only problems I've encounter are those that I was able to fix myself. It's a nice coach but it's no better (or worse) than any other make/model of similar price.

For the OP...you need to look at different make/models to find the floor plan that works for you. Basically, most coaches are pretty much built alike with similar appliances, engines/trans, appointments. If you're looking at used, be sure to REALLY check it out for any signs of leaks, tire mfg dates, soft spots in floors and if you're really lucky, one that has complete maintenance records from previous owners.

Now, I'm not saying that Tiffin is a better coach than Newmar, just that

You said it your self. Your statement is pure hear say and has absolutely nothing to do with being factual. However, you are definitely entitled to your opinion whether it is right or wrong.

I'll step in with what I've seen first had then. :B

My parents owned a Tiffin, like so many others it too made the trip to Red Bay. The "fixes" that were done to it didn't make the trip home before they needed fixing again.

All I can say is every time I worked on that thing it made me go :h what the heck were they thinking - and I worked on it a lot.

I can honestly say I worked on that more in the 5 years they owned it than than I have all 3 of our Newmars combined since 1999.

It was never anything too big, but it was always something.

The good news about Tiffin is they have great factory service, the bad news is so many seem to know it. The crazy thing is from what I have seen first had it's not so good at the factory either.

BTW, friends had the same issue with their Allegro Bus. After the 3rd failed trip to Red Bay they finally gave up on it and went back to a Winnie.

I will freely admit, if I were looking for a new MH today Tiffin wouldn't be on the list.
  • I purchased a used Newmar and they have great customer service.

At the entry level price point they are all junk. You just roll the dice. Sad really. I've seen first hand slipshod, slapped together, cheap materials on everything from Thor to Winnie to Newmar. I've read complaints on this forum and others about issues with every single brand. Some issues are pretty major. Try and pick one that has the best customer service.

  • Winnebago motor homes have been around for a long time. I would say they are just as good as a Newmar or a Tiffin. But every once in awhile you will get a bad one and that is all it takes for this forum to bash them right out of business. Only theirs is the best.
  • I like Newmar. BTW my sister in law is from Smithtown so I know where it is. Quality wise it is better than the new Tiffins form what I hear. Waht about a Prevost, best there is. For 2 million and change plus tax, licensing and other charges as they can make them up you can drive one around. That'll show your neighbor with the 1966 Dodge.
  • I had three winnebagos. Two were great but the third was a mess. Winnebago was great because they were still doing one year warranty work at the five year point. Great they were doing it bad in that it needed to be done. I like my Newmar product much better than any of the weiinbagos, but one can get a "ROUGH ONE" no matter how good the manufacturer.
