Question

I have a problem with the air conditioning vents blowing silver Richards inside our coach. The pieces look like insulation backing. Called Winnebago Industries and was told that it was coming from the insulation that Coleman installs in them for sound deadening. I called Coleman and they had discontinued using that material 3yrs ago. I just have to get up on the roof and pull the covers of the conditioning units and remove the rest of the insulation on both units. Am I alone on this problem?

That insulation would be inside the unit and accessed by removing the inside cover.  The ducts are fed with interior air not air from outside the unit.

My guess is that you've now discovered exactly why they quit using that particular insulation, so, no, you are not alone, others have had exactly that problem, and felt exactly as you do, and said so to Coleman.

I realize that you do not have asbestos. But when I worked at the Power Company we had people who were trained to lock down asbestos insulation when it became exposed. On small jobs they used a small spray can of encapsulate. I do not recall brand names but if you went to an HVAC supplier I would bet they have something similar. You would have to uncover as much of the deteriorating insulation as possible and coat it. Good luck.

Not sure you want to remove insulation unless you are prepared to replace it. I would inspect the inside. Home depot has some good tape for repair, located with the Reflectix products. Other tape (Gorilla) may work as well.

I have talked to Coleman and questioned the after effects of removing the insulation and was told it was a sound dampening barrier. Without getting into a verbal discussion ,I am going to remove the covers and see what is needed to keep the Isulation where it is supposed to be.
