Rear Mud Guards

Rock Guard

Hope you're not driving to Alaska. When we were in Whitehorse Yukon, people were removing the big stiff flaps saying they were throwing rocks on their windshield. We went over to their towed and there was a layer of 1/2" rocks laying at the base of their windshields and the hoods were damaged.

We had just come up the same road behind them. We had flaps behind the tires but not across the rear. We didn't get any damage to our towed - there, and for the whole summer trip. In fact, in 8 years we received no damage.

A few months later we were traveling on an interstate in heavy rain. I made it a point to watch motorhomes going in the opposite direction. Those with the across-the-rear flaps had the water going high on the toad's hood. Those without the flaps had the water at tire level.

Regular mud flaps definitely work better for back roads. The other type looks better for more civilized roads for sure!

We have both mud flaps and a rock guard. Been all over with no problems, so far.

The big coach wide mud guards look nice but a friend had one we compared engine compartments after a day of dusty road driving in CO. His whole engine and compartment was completely coated with a heavy layer of dust. Comparatively speaking ours was cleaner but had a light coating. Both units had side radiators. We have the mud flaps just behind the tires. Theirs did too in addition to the wide mud flap. I understand rear radiator unit can be even worse.

It's funny you mentioned mud guards Ray. I was at my dentist the other day and he told me that a Washington State Trooper stopped him on Hwy.#16 and gave him a warning, due to he did not have mud guards on his diesel pick up truck.

That is a new one I had never heard of something like that.

I got mud flaps behind the wheels, and I have the big mud flap that goes all the way across. The big mud guard is the one I am going to replace. I went up a steep drive way and bent the metal on the mud guard with the tow bar.

Starting to get hot here in the high desert. We are leaving in another week to the Sierra's where it will be much cooler and do some creek fishing.

Unless it has been changed, it has been a requirement for all vehicles to have mud guards on every axle location, no matter what year, pick-up or passenger car. I was researching what color lights were allowed on front and rear, and was taken back to see the requirement for mud guards on all vehicles.
We have seen pictures of toads with far more rocks on the hood, windshield, and roof.
