Robert,
Of course that photo of yours shows tandem rears on a dirt road where no tire rubber is worn away from turning circle scrubbing.
Think about it, or draw some diagrams to visualize it ... tandem non-steering rear tires on turns will have a pivot point mid-way between the two tires when tracing along the turning circle's arc. That means that both tires in the tandem set scrub a little. On a hard surface this must and will translate into tread surface scrubbing.
I wonder if this "rocks getting stuck in between duals" concern isn't a bit over-blown. I didn't have any trouble offroading on an extremely rock-strewn 4X4 path in Death Valley with our E450 Class C. However, I couldn't rip along ... I had to pay attention to the road surface and steer accordingly at all times. Maybe in a Mercedes 4X4 tandem rear wheel SUV(?)/short-bed-PU(?) I could have let'er rip!
However, in Death Valley way out on that 4X4 road we did get to camp at the end of the day in full comfort with showers, popcorn around the campfire, evening movies, etc., and then sleep with clean air in queen size beds during a blowing nighttime Death Valley sand storm. It doesn't get any better than that. ;)
