Replace bed in 23' Thor Majestic for dinette

Because of the age of our kids and caring for my in-laws, I'm thinking of going with small class C to be used as a more comfortable means of transportation. We have essentially 7 adults (and maybe 1 or 2 extras in my niece/nephew) and we've taken some trips renting a 12 or 15 passenger van and sometimes even two vehicles. We first thought about upgrading our class A but we'd have to go with a huge 42' to (maybe) accommodate everyone. My idea is to pick up a 23' class C (leaning toward a Cruise America one) and replacing the rear bed with another booth. This would give us a max driving/seatbelt capacity of 11. It reduces sleeping capacity, but again with 7+ adults (I have 3 sons too) it's just not realistic to use an RV to house everyone. Basically, it'll be a large, comfortable van with a kitchen, bathroom, and plenty of storage.

The question I have is what's under the bed at the rear of the rig? My old class A had part of the water tank in that space. If it's similar, I would have to make a small, raised platform for the booth to sit on. No one is over 6' and I'm not that worried if it's a slight platform. I'm mainly trying to see if that whole space under the bed is used or not.

Thanks!
  • Get a Ford Transit passenger van that seats 15. Curtain off the back row, take out the seat, and add a portapotty.
  • Hi mufasta,

A particular motor home comes to mind for your intended use.

Starting in 1999, Dynamax offered a short Isata Sport motor home specifically for taking large groups of people to sporting events with tail gate parties in-mind. It was primarily a means of traveling in comfort and then hang out in parking lots. They had a decent TV, a nice size fridge, a wet bar, and a bathroom without a shower (or maybe a wet bath). It was made with lots of comfortable leather seating with integrated cup holders and such. I don't recall any sleeping quarters with exception to converting the dinette into a bed. They were very expensive when new, but being so old now, maybe they are affordable. As I said, they were not huge motor homes. They had a B+ cap and were very well built. Given their age now, one might be purchased quite affordably.

I did a quick search and found THIS 2006 Isata Sport on the internet for sale in 2017. It has 4 individual captain seats that face forward but rotate around for conversation, 3 seats on the couch facing sideways, and a 4 seat dinette. Total seating is for 11 people in about 24 feet. They are quite a sharp looking rig and seemingly ideal for what you have in-mind. Given their age, it's nice not having a slide out to worry about, yet the interior is very pleasant.

Many of the 23 foot class C's have a large storage compartment under the corner bed. The bottom 'deck' of the compartment is not the same as the floor of the rv. So, while the bed could be removed, some serious work would need to be done to recreate a floor that is level with the rest of the rv. Also, it would be difficult to create ingress/egress into the booth and still have seating for 4.

This is very true, this is what is under that corner bed.

The floor of the RV is about level with the top of that cooler.

  • Have you discussed this idea with legal consul ? In your home state where its registered , does the DMV and ins co. get involved when you alter a motor vehicles passenger capacity ?

What comes to my mind is :
RV’s and accidents , I can tell you they do not hold up well and tend to flatten out on impact. What once was inside is now outside on the highway.

No airbag protection and Lap-belts are not harnesses ,
passengers can suffer serious injuries with just a lapbelt.
For now , I honestly think you should scrap this idea of YOU altering a motor vehicle to transport passengers.

You really should get a legal consultation before you go any further. All MV’s get impounded in the event of a fatality or serious phys injury MV accident. You are putting YOURSELF in a position of liability IMO. YOU are the one that altered it.
ASK a legal opinion from an attorney with experience in this field .
  • Might be easier to just buy a used short school bus. You could customize the inside pretty easily.
  • 10 people might put you over load capacity... You'll need to keep an eye on that.
  • Water tank would be the largest item IF... the rear pass thru storage area isnt there too. You might not be able to do it. Smaller things under the bed can be heat ducts, water pump, water lines , bypass valves and electrical for your converter panel.
Seatbelt anchoring must be done to the rv frame. Metal chassis not the wood frame.
