Replacing AC in 2003 Rockwood

I need to replace rooftop AC.

Currently has a Duo-Therm 579 Series Brisk Air 57915.731 13,500 BTU
with a wall thermostat. (Modularized roof Top Air Conditioner)

A local ac tech that I really trust recommended replacement after constantly recharging and with no luck locating the leak.

Stupid question. Do I need to buy the exact same unit?

  • If it has the central ducting you may need to worry about it lining up. Non ducted ac you should be able to change to any brand
  • The hardest thing is lifting them on the roof if you DIY. :P
  • No.

We just replaced our unit, the old one was damaged and it was ten years old, even if you buy from a different manufacturer you should be OK

There are only two standard sizes of Roof air units from what I was told by several dealers. Either 13,5000 BTU of 15,000 BTU. All RV roofs have the same size openings - the roof openings are a standard size.

Check out this thread from last month...

If I remember correctly my roof opening size was around 14.5" square for my 13.5K BTU unit.

The only problem you might encounter, if you buy a different brand AC you might also have to buy a new interior cover with the switch and thermostat for a different unit, if you plan on replacing only the roof portion of the AC. Might cost you an extra 50 to 100 bucks but if you shop around you can get a good deal.
