Replacing Carpet

I am going to replace the carpet in my coach. I am going to take out the old carpet and use it for a template. Has anyone replaced carpet doing it this way ? How did it work out ?
  • Check out 'carpet installers'

We had to have carpet replaced in our 5vr.......main floor and two slide outs.
Had two guys come out laid main floor..new padding/tack strips/carpet...removed carpet in slide outs, made templates then took them and had the edges bound/stitched and then installed.
  • Been there and done that Twice!

The problem that You are going to run into is going to hit You at several angles!

First that Carpet was laid down before the Interior and even possibly Exterior Walls were put in place! It may be Taped and glued in spots and will have #2 reason securing it in place.

Second the Junior employee at the Factory who actually attached Your Carpet to the sheet of Flooring Material had a penchant for firing the staple Gun! I'm pretty sure He was playing Shoot the Bad Guy and thought the Staple Gun was a Machine Pistol! There were literally Thousands of Staples that had to be extracted and pulled from the substrate before I was able to even think about installing the New flooring!

By the time You get through Pulling and cutting Your "Pattern" will be almost certainly useless!

I'm not saying don't do it , but I am saying be prepared to sweat and swear...a lot!
  • I know, "why do they respond if they have not tried it"? Well maybe to give encouragement. I think using the previous carpet as a template has its' pro's and con's. I don't know if the process is similar to house carpet laying. But in residential laying I know the carpet is stretched in all directions and secured to a tac strip. The old carpet may have also been stretched so the new carpet would need to be stretched also. As a guide I think the template is a good start keeping that in mind.
