Replacing Inline Fuel Filter

I am replacing the small RACOR inline fuel filter with a VPMAX canister style fuel filter. The RACOR sits between the fuel tank and the lift pump. A local diesel mechanic says that he does this to eliminate a problem for many of his customers.

Replacing the RACOR inline filter is not easy. Replacing filter canisters that can be obtained over the counter at many parts stores is much easier.

I have a problem with algae in a fuel tank and after a biocide treatment, I am sure I will be changing fuel filters for a while.

I would use the primary filter (the new one) as course filter AND water separator. Then secondary as fine filter only. No point in allowing water to get to the lift pump.

Other than that, it is fine. Primary can be anywhere between 10 and 30 micron.

Secondary must meet Cummins specs-- believe that is 5 micron, but please confirm.

Plan is to use a 10 micron (Fleetguard FS1001) on the VPMAX or 30 micron if I can find one.

I use the Fleetguard FS19596 between the lift pump and VP44.

The VPMAX comes with a 3 micron but I will not use it. Don't want to kill that lift pump.
